Christ the Redeemer

Overview

Christ the Redeemer is an art deco-style statue of Jesus Christ, which overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It is located on the top of Mount Corcovado in one of the largest outdoor sanctuaries in the world. It is the fifth largest statue of Jesus Christ and has become an iconic symbol of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is 30 meters tall, excluding its 8 meter pedestal. The statue weighs approximately 635 metric tons. The statue’s inner structure and framework are made of concrete, and the outer layer is covered by a mosaic of six million triangular soapstone tiles. The base of the statue houses a chapel called the Chapel of Our Lady of Aparecida, named after Brazil’s patron saint. During special events, the statue is illuminated at night with multi-colored lights.
